Today we read the book,
Cactus Hotel. It is a fun book that tells all about the life of a Saguaro Cactus. It tells how it is planted, how it grows, how you can tell how old it is, and how the animals use it as a hotel to live in. It starts with just a woodpecker making a hole in the cactus to live in. Then a dove makes a nest on the limb and the woodpecker makes a second hole and an owl moves in, too. Eventually, over many years, there are holes all over in the cactus and lots of animals are living inside of it. When animals move out, new animals move in. While we read, preschoolers listened. They were interested in the cactus and all of the different animals moving in and out.
When we finished, we went outside to look at some real cactus hotels. We talked about the different kinds of cactus we saw and why we should never, ever touch a cactus. Again, preschoolers listened and were excited to learn.
When we came back inside, we got to make our very own cactus hotels. We colored pictures of desert animals, cut them out, and glued them to green paper cut into a cactus shape. It was a lot of work and took them a long time. When they were done, they were excited to tell their families all about who is living in their cactus hotel.
