They Really Are Learning

A student wanted to draw with markers during the "free play" time of class. He scribbled in colors, made some shapes, and then asked me to help him write the letter "a". I helped him write the "a" and then showed him that he could put a "c" before it and a "t" after it to turn it into "cat".

He wasn't impressed! He just looked at it for a really long time. Then he started drawing "A"s all over the paper and explaining that I drew the "a" incorrectly. "It's wrong! It's wrong! This is how you do it." I had no idea he could write any letters, yet he drew them perfectly all over his paper. Mine were wrong in his little head because he wanted to draw a capital letter, but at least he drew the letters correctly over and over again!! This is why I teach and why I love my job!! They really are learning, each and every day!! I promise!
