Hearts, Hearts, and More Hearts

With the start of February, comes the start of our unit on hearts and love as we get ready to celebrate Valentine's Day. We started by learning how to draw hearts. We traced them first and cut them out. Then we practiced drawing hearts on blank paper. The preschoolers were amazed with what they could do. Then we read a book called Panda's Valentine. The poor Panda Bear in the story was trying to make his mom a valentine card that was perfect, just like his mom was perfect. However, when he tried, he just kept making mistakes and the Panda Bear grew frustrated. His hearts were uneven on both sides, the ribbon was not hooked on crooked, and the glue didn't stick the words to the poem he wrote on well enough. His mom saw his frustration and he explained that the card needed to be perfect, like her, and she made him feel better. She didn't care and felt the love Panda Bear was trying to make her feel.

Then, we practiced making hearts that were just perfect. I showed them a "super sneaky trick" to make hearts just right. We folded the paper in half, then cut on the lines drawn.
Then, when we unfolded the paper, the heart we had cut was perfect. It was great to see the amazement on the preschoolers faces as they made perfect hearts. We hung these pink and purple hearts all over our classroom to decorate for Valentine's Day.
