Using shapes to make dinosaurs

Today, we used shapes to draw dinosaurs. We talk about shapes in everything we do. We talk about the shapes we see in our classroom and that we see in books. We always talk about how you can use shapes to make a picture. We've always drawn people using shapes, so today we transferred all of that information to drawing dinosaurs.

We talked about the shapes in a dinosaur and realized they were very similar to the shapes of people. We started with the body as a big circle, then the head as a little circle. We attached the two circles with a rectangle and added a triangle for a tail. Then, we added lines for legs and a dinosaur was created. It was great to see them realize they really could draw a dinosaur all by themselves using simple shapes they already knew.
So, then we transferred that idea to paints. The children painted a dinosaur one day, then let it dry. After it dried, we added googly eyes and details to our dinosaurs. I love how each of these examples was so different. It was fun to see them each be creative and make a dinosaur however they wanted. Yet, as you look, each dinosaur has the same elements and same shapes in them.

Aren't they cute? Everyone different, yet everyone perfect in its own way. It's amazing what can be done with simple shapes.
