An "Icky Gooey" Project
I didn't realize how many of my preschoolers didn't like to get messy until we tried these yarn rainbows. We cut yarn of all the colors in the rainbow to just the right size to make a rainbow.
We then dipped the yarn in white glue (the first day) and starch (the second day) before forming it into a rainbow on blue construction paper. (We tried it both ways to see which was better...It ended up not making a difference, really. They both worked out fine.) The children had to swirl the yarn around in the liquid, and then squeeze some of the extra liquid off with their hands. This got them very messy.
They all, in the end, had fun and their rainbow turned out great!! We added cotton balls to add details and waited for them to dry.
This was a great sensory activity that also reinforced colors and our theme: rainbows!!
