Animals in Cages

Today we talked about why some animals live in cages. It was fun to ask why the preschoolers thought animals should live in a cage. We heard things like because they like cages, because you can put toys in the cage for them, because you can carry them around, and because they are so tiny. We talked about how cages can keep animals safe and how they can keep them out of trouble. We brainstormed animals that lived in cages, like birds, lizards, hamsters, and guinea pigs. We read a book about hamsters and what it takes to take care of them.
Then we made these adorable cages. First, we colored our guinea pigs and cut them out. Then we glued them on the green cage and laced the yarn to make the bars of the cage. There should really be bars going horizontally, also, but we didn't want to get carried away. (Many of the preschoolers said that the guinea pig looks like it is in jail, and they are very correct.) There were so many fine motor skills that we practiced making these cages. They were fun, too, and something the children were very proud of.
