Class Pet

We read the book today called Stanley's Class Pet. It's about a boy who can't wait for his turn to bring the class pet home for the weekend. When he finally gets to bring the bird home, he is talked into opening the cage by a friend. The bird flies out the window and then Stanley has to take the empty cage back to his teacher and tell everyone that he's sorry.

Sounds awful, I know! But it was the perfect lead in to talking about our class pet, Spirit. Since our bunny is "free roaming" in the backyard, he has been adopted by all of your children as our class pet. We talked about what was nice to do to the bunny and what was not so nice. We also talked about how much they wanted the bunny to come out and play with them. They know now that if he comes out, and they are nice, he will be more willing to come out again. If they don't do nice things, like Stanley opening the bird cage, the bunny will stay away from the children and they won't have a fun class pet.
Since it is still really hot, the bunny hasn't been out to play much with us! He stays hidden in is hole where he stays nice and cool. As it cools off in October, we will see him a lot more often!
