Lots and lots of space fun

We watched a short clip of Apollo 13! We watched a scenes that was only about 5 minutes long where the space shuttle launched. We had been talking about how much fire and smoke it takes to get the space shuttle all the way to space since all of the pictures we've been coloring and painting have smoke coming out of the bottom of them. Talking about it was one thing. Seeing it on through the movie, was something so much more real!! The groups went through, one by one, during "centers," getting a chance to watch. They sat like little statues as they quietly watched. It was so fun!! As soon as I turned it off, they all had lots and lots to tell me about. Hopefully, you heard about it, too. If not, ask them about it.

We watercolored the planets in order. This is a way to help students practice the song they've learned. They were told to put it somewhere where they could practice their song throughout the day and get some help if they forgot what came next!!
And lastly, we cut and glued rockets in order of their size. Not only did they have to use their fine motor skills to cut and glue, but they had to use their reasoning skills, to get them in order.
If you come across things at home that can be sorted this way, encourage your child to try. It is great practice. Then, have them switch it and sort them from biggest to smallest. They can sort a bucket of dinosaurs, barbie dolls, even the Cheetos on their lunch plate, whatever you can find so they can practice.
