Using shapes to make pictures

We've spent weeks working on drawing our shapes! We've practiced on paper, using magna doodles, and on the table covered in shaving cream. We've practiced the four basic shapes, circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Now, this week, we put all of that hard work to use.

We explained how you can put shapes together to make pictures. Everyone is excited to learn how to draw and this is the first step. To help, we cut out shapes and let students actually play with the different ways to place the shapes together. We started with two triangles, and asked them to make them into a star.
Then, we had them trace two triangle to make a star. And finally, they tried to make a star all by themselves. It will take time to get it just right, but most of the stars turned out pretty good.

Then, we had them try making a house out of a triangle and a square. Again, they had shapes to use as they practiced.
This was much easier than the star. Again, after using the shapes we had cut, they traced a house made out of the two shapes. Then, they tried all by themselves. This step gave them so much confidence since their houses really turned out great!

We will continue this after fall break and it will help us as we illustrate writer's workshops books. You'll be amazed what your preschooler can do!!
