Shooting Stars

This week we gave one of the most amazing lessons yet and the preschoolers loved it! Since we are talking about things we see in the sky at night, we have talked about stars and the moon and planets. To enjoy the night sky first hand, we hung a blanket to darken the hallway and closed all the doors so it was farely dark. Then, we used a baby mobile that reflects stars on the ceiling and walls. As the children walked into the "night sky" they were quiet and amazed.
We watched the stars for a few minutes and talked about them. I showed them pictures from my computer of stars, planets, the moon, and lastly, shooting stars. We discussed shooting stars and how most people make a wish if they see one. We then had to talk about what a wish was. It was fun for e verybody to tell us about their wish. Some of them were so sweet and others so funny. As we finished up, we went into "center time", where everybody made a shooting star picture and got to trace over the letters in their name with stars.
I love days like this when the lesson goes so well and the children leave excited about learning. You can search on the internet for pictures of things in the night sky and show your child. They would love to see the pictures and remember what they learned in class. I'm sure you can get them talking if you find some shooting star pictures.
